Elementary students in Mineral Point are hoping to convince lawmakers to make
Wisconsin cheese the official state dairy product.
WMTV in Madison reports that the fourth grade class taught by Mrs. Ross, Mrs.
Grimm, and Mrs. Doyle, came up with the idea while studying their Wisconsin
curriculum.
With cheese production being a $43 billion industry, the kids felt it was
appropriate to submit their request.
The teachers have since invited state officials to the school to hear more
about the proposed idea.
This isn't the first time young students were able to make a difference in
promoting the importance of Wisconsin's agricultural industry. In 2004, a group
of fourth graders from Kenosha County convinced the Legislature and then-Gov.
Jim Doyle to make cranberries the state's official fruit.
