Milk production in the United States during October totaled 17.8 billion
pounds, up 1.4 percent from October 2016.
Production per cow averaged 1,894 pounds, 12 pounds above last year..
California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.25
billion pounds, but was one of just four states that had lower production
compared to last year. Arizona had the greatest increase in year-to-year output
as that state produced 405 million pounds of milk in October, up 6.6 percent
from the same month last year.
The number of milk cows on farms was 9.40 million head, 65,000 head more than
October 2016, but 1,000 head less than September 2017.
