The DAT People's Question of the Week:

Immigration is on everybody's mind this week. How would your farm be effected by tougher immigration laws?

This is the kind of conversation we need to have with Perdue or home land security. Too bad we have to have nmpf, big feeling politicians and dfa between us and them. It's a big swamp to cross.

One thing that often is not mentioned when we speak of immigrant workers on farms is that many came here legally on visas which have since expired. Often this happens because regulatory agencies are unable to process the necessary paper work to help the people stay legal. I know from experience that INS may simply ignore requests for guidance. We want legal immigration but to supply our labor markets in the US the system needs to be considerably updated and streamlined for both employers and employees.

This whole immigration issue is being portrayed far differently that reality states. Not necessarily by DAT but definitely by the main stream media. They make it sound as though the "godless hordes" are streaming into the U.S. from Mexico looking to cause harm. My direct experience is the polar opposite. Hispanic labor is reliable. They are family oriented, honest folks. Should they become citizens? I dont' know. It's hard for me to argue with their goal. Make a livable wage here in the U.S. so they can return to Mexico one day, and live a larger lifestyle than they would otherwise have.

The price of milk would increase.

After struggling for 5 years with "legal American citizens" and their feelings of entitlement we went to nearly all Hispanic labor. They are all legal to the best of my knowledge. Their work ethic is a breath of fresh air and I enjoy milking and doing other chores with them. If I were to lose them and have to go back to "legal American citizens" I will do what I used to do. We did the work ourselves when they didn't show up or when they texted me with some lame excuse.

Latinos make up my total milking staff ad well as calf feeders. I think they are all legal but who knows for sure.

Immigration law is going to have a backseat to a tight labor market. Big boys might get to know their cows up close and personal, or the bankers will.

We only have legal American citizens working at our dairy. So it wouldn't be a problem.l
