New regulations for the Dairy Margin Coverage Program are
now under review by the Office of Management and Budget.
Once finalized, farmers will be able to sign up next month
retroactively to the first of the year.
University of Missouri’s Scott Brown tells Brownfield
farmers need to look at their options with fresh eyes. “It’s been a tough time
for dairy producers the last few years and programs like this I think can be
helpful in managing downside risk.”
He says the program’s top end margin coverage level of $9.50
would have paid farmers last year 90 percent of the time as opposed to the 40
percent which was triggered under the old program.
DMC payments for the first three months of 2019 are
available depending on coverage levels.
