The DAT People's Choice Question of the Week: The End of the 2019 Show Season
This week will mark the unofficial end of the 2019 show season with the NAILE show in Louisville, KY. Even with the extended downturn in the dairy industry, many shows continue to maintain or even increase number of cattle shown. Why?

Showing cattle is fun for the young and young at heart.Numbers remain high but attendance( watching) is minimal. In the US the only big event is the WDE.
The show must go on

I think if everyone in the world stopped using dairy products tomorrow, showing dairy cattle would continue. It would be just as dog and cat shows are today. A hobby and competition for those with the money and desire to do it, with little or no relevance to the real world.

I think for some of those in the dairy industry, showing is the last or one of the last enjoyable things left.

Nothing wrong with people with lots of money investing in dairy genetics. In the 30's and 40's Guernsey's was the breed of choice. JC Penneyy etc. then later the A&P heir Bob Rasmusen ,Elmwood Holsteins
My Observation

As I observe, especially the results of the national shows, I see, what looks like, more and more show cattle of all dairy breeds owned by those that do not milk cows for a living (meaning their main source of income does not come from the sale of milk from their farm). Nothing wrong with that, in fact it is good to have outside money coming in to the dairy industry. I don't think the price of a cwt of milk has much, if any, effect on those owners with outside incomes.
Show a little

I don't show at any of the national shows. I do show at our district and state show, for me it is a great time. It is my vacation and there is no where I would rather spend my vacation!
