Ohio Spring Classic Preview
While towns all across America will have color guards and marching bands parading through to celebrate Memorial Day, Jersey cattle will be parading through the sale ring in Sidney, Ohio for the Ohio Spring Classic Sale.

With Todd Woodruff crying the sale and Russell Gammon by his side reading the pedigrees this promises to be a day of quality cattle and great entertainment.

The cattle were previewed the night before where Jersey enthusiasts gathered to look over the consignments and enjoy dinner together.

Lot 19 M-C Tequila Sunshine-ET, a senior calf.

Lot 46 Edgelea Whistler Princessquillo-ET a Junior yearling out of an VG-85 (CAN) dam.

Lot 99 VWF Imperial Lawman Beauty, a JR 3 sells fresh.

Local Jersey and Ayrshire breeders, John and Donna Greiwe of Mill Valley Farms with Donna's father, Ken Knoop who just celebrated his 90th birthday.

Jim and Liz Livock of Avonlea in Canada made the trip down to the sale.

Josh and Jenny Gordon with 11 week old baby Abigail of Indiana, look over the consignments.  Josh is the grandson of the Jersey legend from Heaven Hill fame, Max Gordon, who was featured in one of Norm Nabholz Yesterday's Stories.  Jenny is the daughter of Chuck and Sue Luchsinger of Silver Springs Farm in New York.

Russell Gammon of Jersey Canada and sale chairman Lowell Stevens look over the cattle.

Lowell Steven's granddaughters, who are from a beef farm in western Indiana, enjoy the small calves.

Good sale help gets younger and younger every day.

And while the crowd enjoyed dinner on the grounds.....

.....and heifers were paraded around.....

....the various and sundry kids scared up a game of kickball!

Having a Jersey sale in Ohio on Memorial day has been a tradition in Ohio for well over 80 years with the Folck Classic and now the Ohio Jersey sale. Both sales went all out to salute or Veterans and the people that fought so we could gather with friends and fellow breeders on that special day. My dad and Uncle (both W.W. II vets) would take turns every other year going to Ohio for a great time with great cattle. By no means are these people dis-respecting the Holiday, just the opposite. They are celebrating and remembering with their passion, The Jersey Cow. Melissa, thanks for covering and thanks for the great response. And Ohio Jersey Breeders, again, WELL DONE !

Concerned Breeder: The wonderful lady who put breakfast out for us at the Hampton Inn this morning visited with us at length about her two sons who have served in Iraq. She told us about their valor, their honor and how their brave actions and courage earned them a Purple Heart and the Congressioinal Medal of Honor. As I sit and think about your response to the Ohio Jersey Breeders hosting a sale on Memorial Day and their apparent lack of respect to the men and women who serve our country, I wonder how many other folks are out there having to work today like this mother of two war veterans, instead of standing along a sidewalk to watch a parade or observe a ceremony in a cemetery. These veterans fought for freedom. And that includes the freedom to have a Jersey sale on Memorial Day, the freedom to express opinion about a Jersey Sale on Memorial Day and freedom for hardworking dairy farmers to meet and enjoy fellowship with like-minded people on a national holiday. Thank you to all the veterans out there who have fought for me and the rest of America, including my wonderful father, my Korean War veteran--Richard Peckens.

Having a sale on Memorial Day??? Are you out of your mind!!! I’m surprised the board of directors and the Ohio District 5 breeders did not bring up the potential problem with holding a sale on Memorial Day. The American Jersey Cattle Association (note your name) and without the fine veterans (past & present) to be honored on May 31, 2010 there might not be Jersey Association or a country. Do you have a clue what this day means to most good American and how the public perceives the symbol the Jersey Assoc. is projecting to the public? The last thing the industry needs is any bad publicity by showing this gross lack of respect for Memorial Day.
