DAT People's Choice Question of the Week: Best Strategy to Continue in the Dairy Business?
Dairy farms in the U.S. are rapidly dwindling, with the number of farms just above 24,000 in 2022, based on USDA estimates. Some regions and smaller farms are more affected by economic pressures and exit the industry at a higher rate. Marketing milk directly to consumers and grazing cows year round are just two of the ways a dairy farm may be able to stay in business.

What strategy would you use or do you use to continue in the dairy business?

Our strategy was to sell the cows, sell the farm and live off the interest. It didn't allow us to stay in the dairy business, but continuing to milk cows wouldn't of allowed us the stay in the dairy business either.

We changed to organic dairy farming. It took time, but for our small dairy it has worked and will hopefully provide us the opportunity to stay in the dairy business until we retire.
