For many years marketing registered dairy cattle provided additional income for registered dairy cattle breeders.
Does marketing registered dairy cattle still provide your farm with additional income?

At one time the income we produced from selling registered Holsteins was greater than the income we produced from the sale of milk, oh the good old days. Those days have long past, these days we sell milk and count the days until retirement.

Selling extra springer heifers has always been a source of additional income from our dairy. Many years ago registered heifers were worth more just because they were registered. That has not been the situation for years and we stopped registering and classifing. We still sell about the same number of springers for good prices and have seldom had buyers even ask about the heifers being registered.

Yes, We sell a few bulls, some fresh heifers and occasionally an IVF session. While most heifer buyers are more interested in production information the bull buyers want registered animals.

I'd agree. In fact, the more "commercial" your heifers are, the more they are worth. No silly show bulls in the pedigree, used to freestalls and headlocks, and well vaccinated.

We generate additional income from the sale of springer heifers, but they are not registered. For many years, buyers don't have any interest in the 'registration papers'. The information on dams and sires of the heifers is what they want and that is available without cattle being regestered. We can not justify the additional cost of registering cattle.
